For many NRI families, securing an MBBS seat in a prestigious government medical college in India is a dream filled with uncertainty. For families living abroad, the challenge becomes even greater because of complex documentation, state-specific requirements and limited NRI seats.
For Arshnoor, a student who completed her schooling from Grade 4 to Grade 12 in Qatar, that dream was to study medicine at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Chandigarh. After a challenging admission journey, that dream became a reality when she secured her seat in Round 1 of counselling with the guidance and support of MyCareerMyFuture (MCMF).
A Dream College That Seemed Difficult to Reach
Arshnoor’s family is originally from Chandigarh and is currently settled in Doha, Qatar. Since Arshnoor had completed her schooling entirely in Qatar, the family was initially unsure whether she would be eligible for a seat at GMCH Chandigarh.
The family had always hoped that she could study at the prestigious Chandigarh medical college, but as the counselling process approached, they were uncertain whether the opportunity would actually be possible.
According to her father, Gurvinder Ji, the family was initially more inclined towards exploring opportunities in Punjab. However, Chandigarh remained a dream option in their hearts.
The situation changed with the right guidance and careful preparation.
The Challenge of NRI Seats at GMCH Chandigarh
GMCH Chandigarh is a highly sought-after medical college, and securing an NRI seat can be particularly challenging because of the limited number of seats available.
The family was not only competing for a limited opportunity but also had to ensure that every required document was correctly prepared and submitted.
For NRI families, documentation can become one of the most complicated parts of the admission process. The requirements can include multiple certificates, affidavits, undertakings and legally verified documents, many of which families may not even be familiar with.
For Arshnoor’s family, this was one of the biggest concerns.
The Relief of Seeing “No Deficiency” in Round 1
When the first merit and eligibility list was released, the family had one major concern: Would Arshnoor's documents be accepted without any deficiency?
Seeing her name in the first round without any document deficiency brought enormous relief to the family.
Gurvinder Ji explained that the family was particularly worried about Chandigarh because of the limited number of seats and the complexity of the process.
The MCMF team had created a dedicated communication group involving Arshnoor, her parents and the counselling team. Whenever the family had a question, they could raise it directly in the group and receive assistance.
Even with the time difference between Qatar and India, the team remained accessible. The family mentioned that even when they sent messages around 10 or 11 PM Qatar time, they received quick responses despite it being around midnight in India.
Managing the Documentation Challenge
One of the biggest advantages for the family was having professional assistance with the extensive documentation.
MCMF’s experience in NRI counselling and its legal team helped the family understand which documents were required, how they needed to be prepared and how they should be organised.
The family was also guided regarding the sequence in which the documents needed to be arranged.
This preparation proved extremely valuable during the final admission process.
Legal Support Made the Process Easier
For an NRI family living abroad, preparing affidavits and other legal documents can be a significant
