What does AIQ Counseling involve?

The All India Quota (AIQ) Counseling is a centralized admission procedure managed by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) under the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

With AIQ, 15% of seats from every Government Medical College in a state are combined.

Students from any state are eligible to apply for these seats, making them available without domicile restrictions and based on merit.

For instance, if Uttar Pradesh has 30 Government Medical Colleges, each offering 100 seats, that totals to 3,000 seats. Out of these, 15% (450 seats) are designated for the AIQ pool.

As of 2021, seats from AIIMS, JIPMER, and BHU are also part of the AIQ process. These central universities no longer hold separate counseling sessions.

Why AIQ Counselling Was Introduced

The AIQ system was established in 1986 by the Supreme Court of India to:

  • Provide equal chances for students across the country.
  • Enable students to pursue education in states outside their own.
  • Encourage admissions based on merit.
