For an NRI or foreign-national family, getting admission to a top medical college in India can be a complicated journey. Different institutions have different eligibility criteria, documentation requirements and counselling procedures, making the process particularly challenging for families living abroad.
The success story of Dr. Yogesh Kumar’s daughter is a remarkable example. With a NEET score of 611 and an All-India Rank of 6,948, she successfully secured a Foreign National quota seat at AIIMS Delhi, one of India’s most prestigious medical institutions.
What makes her journey even more interesting is that she had also been accepted into New York University (NYU) in the USA and had already paid a portion of the fees. However, after securing a seat at AIIMS Delhi, she decided to pursue her medical education in India.
Finding the Right Guidance
Dr. Yogesh Kumar, a radiologist working in the USA, had been planning to move back to India with his family. Since his daughter was a US citizen, the family was initially unsure about how her medical admission would work in India.
Questions surrounding foreign-national eligibility, open-category seats, NRI/foreign quota options and documentation made the process confusing.
While looking for guidance online, Dr. Yogesh came across MyCareerMyFuture (MCMF) through YouTube. After watching several videos and having an introductory discussion with the team, the family decided to take professional counselling support.
Managing Complex Foreign-National Documentation
One of the biggest challenges was documentation.
According to Dr. Yogesh, Chandigarh, Haryana and AIIMS Delhi each had different documentation requirements. In some cases, the information available in official guidelines was not completely clear, making it difficult for parents to understand exactly what needed to be prepared.
For a family living abroad, travelling to different cities simply to clarify documentation requirements could be extremely difficult.
The family therefore relied on the MCMF team to help manage the documentation process. This allowed them to focus primarily on the NEET preparation and admission decisions instead of constantly worrying about paperwork.
Dr. Yogesh also appreciated the team's communication through a dedicated WhatsApp group, where updates and new developments were shared with the family.
Securing AIIMS Delhi in the First Round
After achieving 611 marks and AIR 6,948, the family evaluated different possibilities, including an open-category seat in Haryana and foreign-national opportunities.
Ultimately, the family chose the Foreign National quota seat at AIIMS Delhi.
Securing the seat in the first round of counselling brought immense relief to the family. Instead of waiting through multiple counselling rounds with uncertainty about where the admission would eventually happen, they were able to finalise the seat early and focus on the next stage of their journey.
AIIMS Delhi vs NYU: A Major Decision
The decision became even more significant because the student had another excellent option available.
She had been accepted into New York University (NYU) in the United States, and the family had already paid approximately one-fourth of the fees.
Initially, she was uncertain about whether she should pursue medicine in the USA or return to India.
However, securing admission to AIIMS Delhi changed the situation completely.
Once the AIIMS seat was confirmed, she was clear about her decision — she wanted to stay in India and pursue her medical education at AIIMS Delhi.
For the family, securing a place at one of India's most prestigious medical institutions eliminated much of the uncertainty surrounding the decision.
Support Beyond Counselling
Dr. Yogesh also highlighted the importance of having quick access to the counselling team throughout the process.
He shared that whenever he had a question, the team was generally quick to respond, even when queries came late in the evening.
For a parent working as a radiologist in the USA, this accessibility provided an added sense of reassurance during a process involving multiple deadlines and documentation requirements.
A Parent's Advice to Future Medical Aspirants
Looking back at the journey, Dr. Yogesh had a simple message for students: stay focused, work hard and remain consistent.
For parents and students dealing with NRI or Foreign National medical admissions, he also emphasised the importance of having proper guidance, particularly when documentation and eligibility requirements become complicated.
His experience demonstrates that while a strong NEET score is important, understanding the right admission pathway and completing the required formalities correctly can also play a crucial role.
A Dream Achieved at AIIMS Delhi
From a US-based family uncertain about India's medical admission system to securing a Foreign National quota seat at AIIMS Delhi in the first counselling round, this journey represents a significant achievement.
With 611 NEET marks and AIR 6,948, the student had multiple options in front of her — including an admission opportunity at NYU. Ultimately, the opportunity to study medicine at AIIMS Delhi became the choice she wanted to pursue.
Her story is a reminder that for NRI and foreign-national students, the medical admission journey may involve complex decisions and documentation, but with the right information, preparation and guidance, those challenges can be managed effectively.
MyCareerMyFuture congratulates Dr. Yogesh Kumar and his daughter on this remarkable achievement and wishes her a successful journey ahead at AIIMS Delhi.
