MBBS Counselling Terminology Explained: AIQ, Mop-Up, Stray & More

NEET is tough. But what comes after the results can be even more confusing: MBBS counselling. If you’re struggling to understand terms like AIQ, Mop-Up, and Stray Round, you’re not alone.

This guide simplifies the most important MBBS counselling terms you must know to make confident, error-free decisions. And if you're tired of tracking everything manually, NAS by MCMF makes it easier.

📜 What is AIQ (All India Quota)?

  • 15% of government medical college seats in every state are reserved under All India Quota.

  • These seats are available to all NEET-qualified students across India (except in J&K, unless opted in).

  • Counselling for AIQ is conducted by MCC (Medical Counselling Committee) on mcc.nic.in

Example: A student from Uttar Pradesh can apply for AIQ seats in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, etc.

📝 What is State Quota?

  • The remaining 85% of seats in each government medical college are reserved for domicile/resident students of that state.

  • Each state has its own counselling board (DME, KEA, BCECE, etc.)

  • Rules, fees, and dates vary by state

This is why many students use tools like NAS to track every state’s unique updates.

✍️ What is Mop-Up Round?

  • After Round 1 & 2 of counselling (AIQ or state), seats may still remain vacant.

  • These seats are then offered again in a Mop-Up Round.

  • Usually offline or fresh choice filling, but eligibility may differ

Warning: If you already took admission in Round 2, you may not be allowed in Mop-Up!

⚖️ What is Stray Round?

  • Stray Vacancy Round is the final chance to grab vacant MBBS seats.

  • Happens after Mop-Up, usually handled directly by the colleges.

  • No fresh registrations; only students already registered are eligible.

These rounds are fast and often missed due to lack of alerts — which NAS solves by sending real-time SMS updates.

❌ Why Terminology Confusion Leads to Missed Seats

  • Students misunderstand eligibility rules

  • Assume Mop-Up = 3rd round and miss out

  • Confuse AIQ with State quota

  • Don’t know which rounds allow upgrades or fresh choice filling

All this leads to incomplete participation or missed deadlines.
