Many students dream of pursuing MBBS and becoming a doctor. If you are one of them, understanding the NEET counseling process is crucial for securing admission to a medical college.

NEET Score: Your Gateway to MBBS Admission

The NEET exam (conducted by the National Testing Agency - NTA) determines your eligibility for MBBS admissions in India. Your NEET score and All India Rank (AIR) play a crucial role in the MBBS counseling process.

Types of NEET Counseling for MBBS Admission

After clearing NEET, students must register for different types of medical counseling based on their eligibility:

1. All India Quota (AIQ) Counseling – 15% Seats

  • Conducted by: DGHS (Director General of Health Services) through MCC (Medical Counseling Committee)
  • Eligibility: Open to students across India for 15% of seats in Government Medical Colleges
  • Key Benefit: Admission to top government medical colleges in various states

2. Deemed Universities Counseling

  • Many Deemed Medical Universities in India offer MBBS seats through a separate counseling process.
  • Registration & counseling are conducted separately for these universities.

3. State Quota Counseling – 85% Seats

  • Eligibility: Reserved for domicile students of the respective state
  • Covers: 85% of seats in Government Medical Colleges + seats in Private Medical Colleges
  • Conducted by: Each state’s medical counseling authority
  • Important Note: Each state has its own rules & regulations for MBBS admissions.

4. NRI Quota Counseling

  • Reserved for: Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) in select Government and Private Medical Colleges
  • Availability: Some states offer NRI quota in both Govt. & Private colleges, while others limit it to Private Medical Colleges only.
  • Admission Procedure: Different from general counseling; students must check state-specific NRI admission guidelines.

Rounds of NEET Counseling

  • AIQ Counseling: Conducted in 2 rounds. Vacant seats, if any, are transferred back to the respective states.
  • State Counseling: Generally 2 rounds followed by Mop-up and Stray Vacancy Rounds.
  • Deemed & Central Universities: Have Mop-up and Stray Vacancy Rounds if seats remain unfilled.

What Happens After MBBS Admission?

  • Once allotted a seat, students must report to the assigned medical college with their original documents & photocopies.
  • Admission is confirmed after document verification and fee submission.
